Number plates are sitting in front of motorcycles too, BRTA is bringing AI under surveillance

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has taken the initiative to install number plates on the front of motorcycles to restore order on the roads and to easily identify traffic violators. This initiative is being taken to make the artificial intelligence (AI) based traffic surveillance system more effective.

According to BRTA, currently some motorcyclists are deliberately covering some numbers of the number plates on the road. Again, since the number plate of the motorcycle is only at the back, in many cases the AI ​​camera placed from the front cannot correctly identify the number of vehicles violating traffic laws. As a result, complications are being created in law enforcement.

To deal with this situation, a plan has been taken to make the number plate mandatory in front of the motorcycle as well. Several rounds of meetings have already been held between BRTA and related organizations to review the necessary policy and technical aspects in this regard.

According to the concerned officials, AI-based traffic cameras will be able to identify motorcycles more effectively if front number plates are added. It is expected that the trend of disobeying traffic laws, distorting number plates or keeping them hidden will also decrease.

According to BRTA's latest data, the total number of motorcycles registered in the country till June 2026 49 lakh 97 thousand 90. The stakeholders see this new initiative as an important step to bring such a large number of motorcycles under the surveillance of modern technology.

However, BRTA has not yet made any final announcement regarding when the number plate on the front of the motorcycle will be made mandatory or what will be its design and implementation method.
