Life sentence of elder brother for beating younger brother to death with hammer in Joypurhat

The court sentenced elder brother Ashok Kumar Das to life imprisonment in the case of beating his younger brother to death with a hammer over a land dispute. At the same time, he was fined 5 thousand rupees. In default of payment of fine, one more month's imprisonment shall be served.

On Sunday (August 2) afternoon, Additional Sessions Judge (Second Court) of Joypurhat Md. Tasruzzaman announced this ruling.

Convicted Ashok Kumar Das is son of Fanindranath Das of Damdama village of Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat.

According to court and case documents, the deceased Siddheshwar Das was an iron worker by profession. He had a long-standing dispute with his elder brother Ashok Kumar Das over the family land.

On November 16, 2009, Siddheshwar was resting on a bench in front of the shop after work at the forge. At that time Ashok went there and hit him hard on the head with a heavy hammer from the shop. Accused Ashok fled from the spot when local people came forward and tried to rescue him.

The locals first admitted Siddheshwar to the Jaipurhat Modern District Hospital as he was seriously injured. Later, when his condition worsened, he was taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. He died on March 29, 2010 after being under treatment there for about four months.

In this incident, Kamana Rani, the wife of the victim filed a case of murder at Panchbibi police station. After a lengthy judicial process, taking testimony and reviewing the evidence presented, the court ruled that the charges against the accused had been proved beyond doubt.
