Meta is going to launch a new facility for Facebook users. Verified badges can be obtained without any payment if certain conditions are met. In this new service called 'Facebook Verified', the user's identity will be verified through a short selfie video. Meta claims the initiative is aimed at identifying fake accounts and fake identities created with artificial intelligence (AI).
The new system requires users to submit a short selfie video for verification. Mater's automated technology will then verify that the profile picture matches the person's appearance in the video. Verified badge can be added to the account within minutes if the identity and other information is correct.
However, this free verification facility will not be open to everyone. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age. Also, if the account has a history of fraud, spreading false information or violating Facebook's Community Guidelines, the application may be rejected.
Initially, the verified badge will appear on user profiles, groups, marketplaces and Facebook dating services. The badge is also planned to appear on posts published in the feed at a later date. Once the identity verification is completed, the verified identity will be associated with that account across the entire Facebook platform.
Meta said the new 'Facebook Verified' service is not a replacement for their existing 'Meta Verified' subscription. MetaVerified is a paid subscription service where users get additional customer support and various premium benefits.
On the other hand, the main purpose of the new 'Facebook Verified' service is to confirm the user's identity. No additional customer support or premium benefits will be attached to it.
In the first phase, this facility will be introduced in some countries of the world. Then there are plans to expand it to other countries step by step. Meta hopes that this new system of identity verification will help make Facebook a safer, more reliable and trustworthy platform by reducing the spread of fake accounts and AI-based fake identities.
