Ex-deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank sentenced to 3 years imprisonment for not submitting assets statement

The court has sentenced former Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Sitanshu Kumar (SK) Sur to three years rigorous imprisonment in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on the charge of not submitting the statement of assets. On Tuesday (July 28), Judge Ayesha Nasreen of Dhaka's Special Judge Court-2 announced the verdict.

During the pronouncement of the verdict, SK Sur was brought to the court from the jail. After the verdict was announced, he was sent back to jail with a warrant.

ACC Public Prosecutor (PP) Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the sentence.

According to the case documents and related sources, the ACC issued a notice to submit asset statement seeking detailed information on his and his dependents' movable and immovable assets, liabilities and sources of income after the allegations of acquiring assets outside known income were made against SK Sur.

On October 27, 2024, SK Sur accepted the said notice and asset declaration form under his own signature. However, it was alleged in the case that he did not submit the asset statement to the ACC within the stipulated 21 working days.

In this incident, on December 23, 2024, ACC Deputy Director Nazmul Hussain filed a case under section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004 as a plaintiff.

After the investigation of the case, a charge sheet was filed against SK Sur on August 25, 2025. Later, on November 6 of the same year, the court formally charged him and started the trial.

Seven witnesses testified in the case during the trial. After reviewing the evidence and other documents, the arguments of both the parties ended on July 15. The court then fixed July 28 as the day of pronouncement.

It is to be noted that on January 14, 2025, a team of ACC arrested SK Sur from Segunbagicha area of the capital. He has been in jail since his arrest.

The court sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment as the charge of not submitting the assets statement was proved in the case.
