Neem or charcoal for dental care - which is more beneficial?

In the age of modern toothbrushes and toothpastes, the use of natural methods of dental care has been greatly reduced. But once upon a time brushing teeth with neem pods or charcoal powder was a daily habit in almost every family in rural Bengal. Although these two methods have been popular for a long time, the question remains - which one is actually more beneficial and safe for the teeth?

According to experts, both neem dal and charcoal have some benefits. However, neem dal is relatively safe and effective for regular use. On the other hand, charcoal can help remove stains, but excessive use can damage tooth enamel.

Neem dal has long been used as a natural toothbrush in Ayurveda. The antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties in yams help reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth and keep teeth and gums healthy.

Regular consumption of neem dal can strengthen the gums, reduce bleeding gums and reduce bad breath. One end of the dal is chewed and the bristles are used like a brush, which acts as a gentle massage of the gums as well as cleaning the teeth.

Brushing the teeth with charcoal or ash powder was a common practice in rural Bengal. Charcoal's absorbency can help remove some tea, coffee, or tobacco stains on teeth. For this reason, activated charcoal is also used in many toothpastes today.

However, experts warn that ordinary charcoal powder or ash is quite abrasive. Regular or vigorous use of it can cause erosion of the tooth's outer protective layer or enamel. This can lead to tooth sensitivity, hot and cold pain, and an increased risk of long-term tooth loss.

What are the experts like?

According to dental experts, neem pods are more beneficial than charcoal for overall protection of teeth and gums. Because it not only cleans the teeth, but also helps to reduce the germs in the mouth. On the other hand, while charcoal is primarily helpful in removing external stains, it is never a substitute for regular brushing.

How to take care of teeth?

Brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice a day, getting regular dental checkups and eating less sugar-rich foods are the most effective ways to keep your teeth healthy, experts advise. As a natural alternative, neem dal can be used once or twice a week. However, before regular use of charcoal powder, one must consult a dentist.

Neem dal is still a safe and effective option as a natural remedy for dental care. In contrast, while charcoal may be somewhat helpful in reducing tooth stains, overuse risks more harm than good. So conscious consumption of neem dal can be a good practice along with modern dental care for healthy teeth and gums.
