Death marches are increasing every year on the roads and highways of various districts and upazilas including the capital of Bangladesh. Analyzing the data of road accidents, it has been found that the death toll in road accidents has increased almost one and a half times in the last four years. As the number of vehicles on the road has increased after the launch of the Padma Bridge, accidents and fatalities have also increased significantly in the last six months. Competition among drivers and reckless driving, daily contract driving, hiring of unlicensed drivers, lack of awareness among pedestrians, overtaking in violation of traffic laws, driving for long periods without breaks, non-enforcement of laws to stop unfit driving, increase of motorcycles and three-wheelers on roads and highways, construction defects of highways, simultaneous movement of legal and illegal and fast and slow vehicles on the same road, roadside stalls and shops and Uneducated and reckless drivers, lack of political will, are the main reasons for these accidents.
The government is giving instructions and decisions one after another for road safety. But due to non-implementation of these, chaos continues on the road. Because of this, the roads and highways of different districts of the country are dying every day. At various times there are agitations and protests and no work is going on. Almost every day, dead bodies fall on the road in accidents. Mother's lap is empty. But the bridge is not getting the full benefits due to the wide highway. Many wise, virtuous, intellectuals, innocent children to old people, school and college students are losing their lives every day due to the killing of machine monsters. Relatives are losing their earners in accidents. Many are permanently crippled by road accidents. No one is spared. Nothing can prevent road accidents. Anger is spreading among the local residents, families who have lost relatives in road accidents and the injured. Road accidents have become an inevitable fate for the countrymen. There is not a day when several people are not killed in road accidents somewhere in the country. Actually road accident is not only an accident but its financial cost is huge. However, by fixing the maximum speed of traffic on the highway and forcing the drivers to follow the specified speed by using speed measuring devices, the accidents will be reduced a lot, experts said. Moreover, drivers have to confirm the issue of license issue. Construction and renovation of highways should be done according to proper planning. Law enforcement, trained drivers and roadworthy vehicles are essential to prevent road accidents. At the same time people should also be aware. Only then the country's roads will be accident free.
