A passenger bus lost control on the Dhaka-Barisal highway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur and overturned in a water-filled ditch on the side of the road. At least 20 passengers were injured in this accident. Local residents and members of the fire service quickly carried out a rescue operation and sent the injured to the hospital.
The accident happened at Bablatla bus stand area of Chumurdi Union of the upazila around 4 pm on Sunday (August 2).
Eyewitnesses said that a Dasmina Paribahan bus bound for Barisal from Dhaka suddenly lost control when it reached Bablatla area. In no time, the bus overturned in a water-filled ditch on the side of the highway. Many passengers inside the bus were injured and panic spread at the spot.
After the accident, local residents quickly rushed to the spot and started rescue operations. After receiving the information, a team of Bhanga Fire Service reached the spot with the help of locals and rescued the passengers trapped inside the bus and sent them to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex. The identities of the injured were not immediately known.
Feroze, a passenger of the bus, said that the bus was moving at high speed. It suddenly lost control and overturned in the water of the ditch on the side of the road. Later the locals broke the windows and brought the passengers out.
Abu Zafar, Station Officer of Bhanga Fire Service, said that the rescue team reached the spot and started the operation as soon as the news was received. The rescue operation was completed after it was confirmed that no passengers were trapped inside the bus.
Meanwhile, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhanga Highway Police Station. Helaluddin said that after receiving information about the accident, the police went to the spot and assisted in the rescue work. Rescue work of the accident bus is going on. At the same time, the process of investigating the cause of the accident and taking necessary legal action is also going on.
Initially, it is believed that the accident happened because the driver lost control of the bus. However, the relevant authorities are investigating the matter to know the real reason.
